What’s the difference between creativity and innovation?

Two weeks ago, a couple of colleagues and I ended up in a dialogue about this question:

Is there a difference between creative thinking and innovation? and if so, what is it?

My belief is that creativity thinking is a new, or original way of looking at something and that innovation is the manifestation of that original thought into something tangible. Apparently there are many views on this subject. Here’s one from a great webblog called ideaflow.

I want to know how you define creativity and innovation and/or what are your favorite definitions?

I think this is a great discussion in a professional forum or over coffee. Either way there are two distinct differences that I think exist between Creativity and Innovation The main difference for me is really dependant on what the intended purpose is. Lets assume it keeps the same theme around driving an inititive or meeting a certain goal. Under this assumption, creativity though drenched in original thought, I still believe is taken from a previous idea. You may argue that things are truly “creative”, but it is still a different viewpoint on a typically already stated process or system. So, I guess Innovation is the 2nd tier version of Creativity. It is a more measureable version. they are ideally the same thing, with Innovation being the younger brother of creativity. So here are my defitinitions: Creativity is the act of applying an infiinite amount of possibilities to an original or stated thought or process. Innovation is the measurable version of creativity. I love the blog!
